Research Interests
My research interests are quite diverse as long as it has to do with networks and distributed systems. In general, I like quantitative research problems, which can be stated in a well-defined mathematical manner. However, I also fancy experimental work alongside with measurements.
Lately, I have been focussing on two main themes in distributed and networked systems: performance and security.
For performance, I put a lot of effort into the (deterministic and stochastic) network calculus methodology, as I believe it to have a great potential to find the right tradeoff between mathematical complexity and providing insights.
In security, we focus on wireless networks. As the physical layer in wireless networks brings about the biggest challenges for security solutions, we made several efforts to assess those and provide countermeasures or even leverage from the wireless characteristics. Lately aviation and space have been our main application areas.
Here, I provide a partial list of recent research topics (more details can be found in the selected publications below)
- Performance Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Complex Distributed Systems
- general development of the network calculus (deterministic and stochastic)
- tool support
- modeling and analysis of real-world schedulers such as e.g. WRR or IEEE TSN
- introduction of the scaling element in network calculus (deterministic and stochastic)
- Physical-Layer Security in Wireless Networks
- security solutions leveraging from the wireless characteristics, e.g. key extraction
- aviation security
- space security
- experimental work with software-defined radios
